Biografia "The Eagles"

El grupo estaba integrado por Don Felder en la guitarra; Glenn Frey guitarrista y cantante; Don Henley en la batería y cantante; Bernie Leadon en las cuerdas (guitarra, mandolina, y banyo); Randy Meisner en el bajo y los coros; Timothy B. Schmit: bajo y coros; y Joe Walsh en la guitarra y los coros.

Quizás el primer logro de esta banda norteamericana fue el llevar la música "country" y "western" hasta las grandes audiencias. El reconocimiento vino rápido porque rescataron el sonido sureño mezclándolo con el buen tocar de las guitarras y un rock suave. Abrieron el camino para que muchos músicos mezclaran el "country" con el "rock" y lograran preciosas baladas, algo de rock pesado y algunos himnos difíciles de olivdar.

En un inicio fueron la banda que respaldaba a Linda Ronstadt, pero decidieron abrir un camino propio con éxitos mucho más grandes. Ese éxito está presente hoy día, pues siguen vendiendo todo su catálogo como ningún otro grupo musical. De hecho, las 26 millones de copias vendidas por "The Eagles Greatest Hits Volume One" despalzaron a "Thriller" de Michael Jackson como el disco más vendido de todos los tiempos. Ese mismo álbum fue el primero en ser certificado como platino (más de un millón de copias) por la industria fonográfica de Estados Unidos en 1976.

Lanzaron cuatro álbumes consecutivos al número uno entre 1975 y 1979. Pero para probar que no habían perdido su talento, en 1994 salió el compacto "Hell Freezes Over" que también ocupó el primer lugar por dos semanas. Tuvieron 5 canciones en el número uno y cinco más entre las diez más calientes; yvendieron más álbumes en los setenta que ninguan otra banda estadounidense. Además, estando la banda inactiva en los ochenta siguió vendiendo un promedio de un millón y medio de discos anuales.

Los Eagles son la crónica de unos años setenta de alto vuelo, en el que el cambio social llevó a "una vida en la vía rápida". Entre líneas, se puede leer que su tema favorito era entrar en contradicción con el sueño americano.

Si bien es cierto empezaron como una banda de rock y country, el tema de sus álbumes era oscuro y basado en la seducción y el exceso. Temas probablemente fertilizados en el ambiente de la década reinante en Los Ángeles, ciudad donde aparecieron en 1971 y desaparecieron en 1980. Sin embargo, en 1994 se vieron obligados a volver a los escenarios por la exigencia de una audiencia que quería su música y los mensajes que la acompañan. Este año, 2002, inician una gira por los Estados Unidos.

Habiéndose separado de Linda Rodstock empezaron a definir un estilo musical que evocaba al viejo oeste norteamericano con toda la mitología que acompaña a un proceso de expansión de fronteras. Su primer álbum "Take it easy", despegó con ese mismo tema y "Witchy Woman". Luego vino "Hotel California" en 1973 y con él la idea del rockero como un forajido.

Su tercer álbum, "On the Border", fue bastante atropellado en su producción. Se mudaron de ciudad de grabación de Londres a Los Ángeles, tuvo un nuevo productor (Bill Szymczyk), hubo un guitarrista nuevo (Don Felder) y el éxito se debió a la balada musical "The Best of My Love" que fue número uno en marzo del 75.

"One of These Nights", su siguiente álbum, reflejó la desilusión que había en el horizonte político y en la vida personal de la juventud norteamericana a mediados de la década. La sociedad se debatía entre el escándalo de Watergate y las celebraciones del bicentenario de la Independencia norteamericana. En ese clima de incertidumbre y desconfianza encontró espacio el disco.

Ese fue su primer LP en ser número uno y colocaron tres sencillos en el primer lugar de las listas de popularidad. ( "One of These Nights," "Lyin' Eyes" y "Take It to the Limit"). El álbum se grabó en seis meses con la presión creadora de Henley y Frey, que terminó por hacer que Bernie Leadon abandonara el grupo en 1975. Leadon fue reemplazado por Joe Walsh quien trajo más influencia del rock pesado a la banda.

En ese momento los miembros de la banda podían considerarse superestrellas. Pero con la salida de su quinto álbum (Hotel California) el grupo se disparó. El LP fue armado fudamentalmente en el estudio durante todo un año y fijó un nuevo estándar en materia de composición y mezcla musical. Salió a la calle en diciembre de 1976 y es, sin incluir discos de éxitos, su álbum más vendido. De ese álbum se extrajo una frase que se integró al lenguaje popular norteamericano: "vivir en la vía rápida" (Life in the fast lane). El año de grabación separó a otro miembro: Randy Meisner, quien fue sustituído por Timothy Schmit.

Su sexto álbum, "The Long Run", implicó la ruptura definitiva del grupo después de dos años de grabación. Desde cualquier punto de vista el disco fue un éxito, no sólo por "Heartache Tonight," "The Long Run" y "I Can't Tell You Why", sino también por los niveles de calidad en su producción. Quizás la portada negra del LP era premonitoria, porque para 1980 la banda se había separado.

Don Henley, Glenn Frey y Joe Walsh iniciaron carreras en solitario. Mientras tanto, la influencia del grupo inspiró un movimiento renegado llamado nuevo country.

En 1993, las 13 bandas más populares del country grabaron "Common Thread: The Songs of The Eagles" como un tributo al grupo. Quizás fue el triple platino del disco lo que posibilitó la reunion de The Eagles un año después.

En 1994 Glenn Frey anunció, al inicio de uno de sus conciertos, que las vacaciones de 14 años del grupo habían terminado. "Vemos esto no como una reunión, sino como un retomar", dijo en aquella oportunidad. Grabaron 4 canciones nuevas, que se unieron a 11 éxitos anteriores en "Hell Freezes Over". Y desde entonces no han parado a pesar de los altos precios de las entradas para sus eventos
